Nanyi is a senior Economics major with both a Math and Digital Humanities minor. Through her role as the team's mapping specialist, she geolocated data to create interactive map visualizations using Esri, a GIS mapping software. In the future, she would like to become a designer or creative director.
Samantha is a third-year Business Economics major with a minor in Entrepreneurship and Digital Humanities. On campus, she is involved in numerous business related organizations such as Bruin Entrepreneurs and 180 Degrees Consulting to help her pursue her career path in entrepreneurship, consulting, and strategy. Samantha created and analyzed the data visualization on the damage and losses of war on New Jersey using Tableau and Excel. "This project has allowed me to work with data and experiment with different ways to visualize data in a way that tells a story."
Carrie is a fourth year Political Science major with an Entrepreneurship minor. She wants to go to law school post-graduation as she is particularly interested in international and corporate law. She also co-founded the Burmese Student Association at UCLA. For the project, she used Palladio to create a network graph and Tableau to portray a narrative about New Jersey's efforts in industrial mobilization and shipbuilding during WWII. "Working on this research project helped me further develop my technological literacy because I learned how to use various software platforms to shape the narrative of our project."
Christian Lomeli is a senior anthropology major with aspirations to work in consumer insights/market research. For this project, Christian contributed to the project through doing research and analyzing the patterns of shipwreck by vessel types. He illustrated the results using Tableau. "Through this project, I learned how to interpret massive datasets for practical use and to build a research question around them."
Van is a fourth year Art History major with a Digital Humanities minor. She is currently a Transfer Coordinator for UCLA's Southeast Asian Campus Learning Education and Retention and a Communications Intern for the Hammer Museum. She hopes to pursue marketing in the future. Van created the project's website using WordPress.
Brittany is a fifth year Economics major. She is currently interning at Bliss, a skincare product company, as a Social Media and Influencer Marketing Intern. She says that her involvement in Pi Sigma Epsilon, a business marketing fraternity, has shifted her career path from accounting to marketing. Brittany created our interactive timeline of World War II using Knight Lab software created by Northwestern."I decided to take the DH 101 class because of my newfound curiosity in learning how to break down data in this digital age. Working with my teammates has definitely taught me that there's not just one correct way in telling a story, but in how you deliver it."
