What does this mean for New Jersey?

The attacks on the coast of New Jersey forced the city to “wake up” to the war through devastating deaths, losses, and fear. Our narrative highlights the disturbance in civilian life through maritime activity during the war and the subsequent reactions from both the public and private sector. However, we can see that New Jersey played a critical role in helping the country rapidly mobilize and build the world’s largest naval fleet. This ultimately helped to bring about the Allies’ victory in World War II.
Although we are familiar with WWII as one of the biggest wars in human history, sometimes we forget that the war’s impact on our society is complex and can never be truly reflected through data. We hope that this case study of the impact of war on New Jersey highlights the transformational quality of war on societies, and invites you reflect on how the war has shaped the society that you live in now.
